Supporting Excellence in Independent School Governance

The Good Governance Programme was created by HMC and AGBIS in 2020 to support and recognise excellence in governance across HMC and AGBIS member schools. As the landscape of independent education continues to evolve, so too must the standards and expectations of governance. That’s why this programme has been revised to ensure alignment with current governance needs and practices.

What’s New?

This refreshed programme offers a flexible, modular approach to governance training, specifically tailored for governing bodies in HMC and AGBIS schools. Led by experienced governors, heads, and senior representatives from HMC and AGBIS, this series provides unparalleled insight into effective governance.

Certification: The Good Governance Programme Certificate

To earn your school’s Good Governance Programme Certificate, you must demonstrate the following:

  • All governors must:
    • Watch the Overview Module
    • Complete the AGBIS Governor Safeguarding Training
  • At least one governor must attend each of the additional four live webinars, ensuring the full breadth of content is covered at Board level. This does not have to be the same governor for each session.

Upon successful completion of the programme, your school will be issued with a Good Governance Programme Certificate. This will be celebrated by AGBIS and HMC via their social media channels and you will be eligible to advertise this certification mark on your school’s website. The certificate signals your school’s commitment to sector-leading governance and will be valid for 3 years.
