Keynote: The impact of premature birth on children and families in the EYFS Preterm birth increases the risk of developmental and learning difficulties that can persist into school age. These children are more likely to have special educational needs and lower academic attainment, yet their needs can often go unrecognised in educational settings, allowing them to “slip under the radar”. Greater awareness among education professionals is therefore vital to ensure difficulties are identified early and appropriate support is put in place. Lady Sarra Hoy will share a parental perspective on having a premature baby and the long-term impact on families navigating childhood beyond the neonatal stage. Professor Johnson will present the latest research on the long-term effects of premature birth on learning and development, and introduce free training available to help schools and early years settings support preterm-born children and their families. Keynote: Do you know what makes me tick? The role of the Key Person in understanding emotional literacy How often as adults do we walk into an environment that makes us feel uncomfortable? It might be because of the people, the smells, the room layout or what might be expected. Our years of experience have usually given us strategies to deal with these emotions, unless it is an entirely unexpected event. We may even choose to leave the situation. We can usually self regulate and make decisions without help. But what about the youngest children with the least life experience or, possibly, unsettled life experience? How do we help them to be able to regulate their emotions? How well do we know the unique children we work with? In this session I will talk about what it means to be emotionally literate, how this is reflected in the physical and emotional environments and introduce the Leuven Scales as a tool to help understand individual children and make a difference for them.
