Preparing to Lead Academic Departments - Tuesday 1 November 2022 (Online)

Aspiring Heads of Academic Departments and Heads of Academic

Departments-designate.

Please note, Heads of Department already in post may wish to consider the Independent Schools’ Qualification in Academic Management rather than this course, details of which can be found at www.hmcpd.org.uk

• Have identified their own personal Core Values as a future Leader, to cross-reference with everything covered below
• Discuss the main skills required, opportunities and challenges when “stepping-up” from teacher to Leader, and how to embrace them
• Consider what might be needed to “cross the line” now, i.e. to broaden skillset, to get noticed at the application and interview stages, and to potentially get promoted

Course outline:

Our course splits in to two 90-minute sessions, with a short break in between. Each session comprises a brief introduction, followed by small interactive breakout room discussions and exercises focusing on each of the above themes, then feedback and key “take-aways” shared with the whole group. Breakout room leaders are thriving and ambitious Heads of Department who either currently work or have worked in our HMC schools.
