School Anxiety and Avoidance: What do we know?

In this webinar, Dr Weston summarises what we know on the topic of school avoidance and considers how schools might differentiate between normal anxiety and problematic anxiety. She will share case studies of children who have struggled to attend school and model responses that are both evidence-based and appropriate. Her webinar will leave attendees feeling informed, equipped and better able to optimally support pupils in their care.

Speaker Biography

Dr Kathy Weston is the one of the leading UK experts on parental engagement in children's lives and learning and the founder of Tooled Up Education, an extensive, online platform that offers whole school communities evidence-based resources, webinars, activities, podcasts and articles on topics related to: children's mental health, wellbeing, learning, academic thriving, digital engagement, family life and relationships. Tooled Up also provides school staff with bespoke CPD (on request) and gives educators access to online events where fresh research insights are shared. Dr Weston is the author of two books on 'Engaging Parents' (Bloomsbury, 2018;2020) for primary and secondary teachers, and the weekly author of Wednesday Wisdom, an online newsletter read by over 11,000 readers from all over the world. Dr Weston was educated at the universities of Queen's Belfast, Louvain-La-Neuve in Belgium and the University of Cambridge.
