Expert-led Webinar: Chaos, Conspiracy, and Critical Thinking: Lessons to Learn from the Summer Riots - Tuesday 15 October 2024 (Online)
HMC Expert-led Webinars – a series of online CPD sessions, focusing on current themes and issues within wider society impacting schools and school culture.
Description
Chaos, Conspiracy, and Critical Thinking: Lessons to Learn from the Summer Riots
Following events this summer, online disinformation, misinformation and conspiracy theories fuelled violence in many towns and cities across the UK. This session argues that schools are best placed to educate about the controversial issues that many see as a real threat to our democratic way of life. Focusing on the pedagogy of conspiracy theories, we will learn how best to equip our pupils with critical thinking skills and promote character virtues in an age of fake news and alternative facts.
Glenn Y. Bezalel is Deputy Head (Academic) at City of London School, where he teaches Religion & Philosophy. Glenn is also researching conspiracy theories and controversy at the University of Cambridge. He is the author of numerous publications on a range of educational topics, including most recently Teaching Classroom Controversies, published by Routledge, a book for school leaders and teachers on how to navigate controversial issues in the age of fake news and alternative facts.
